Originally published in 1851 and 1854, The Hymnal Noted includes over a hundred ancient and medieval Hymns, Sequences, and Antiphons of the Latin Church, in beautiful English translations, and set to their original Gregorian plainchant settings.

“These hymns” wrote Neale, “were not written by any one man, nor at any one time. They are offerings, cast into the treasury of the Church, slowly, and at different periods, during the space of a thousand years. The writers of most of them are unknown. Of those whom we do know, some are among the greatest Saints that God has raised up in the Church. These very hymns, then, have consoled thousands of God’s faithful servants in all kinds of circumstances, almost from the days of the Apostles to our own:-and if on this account only, they ought to be dear to us.”

The Hymnal Noted, made available for the first time since its original publication, is here reproduced in full, with the addition on new Indices, an Appendix showing the historical origins of each hymn, and Neale’s Short Commentary on the original first part of the Hymnal (covering the first 46 hymns).
